The Philippine International Studies Organization (PHISO)

The Philippine International Studies Organization (PHISO) is the pioneering professional organization dedicated to the promotion of International Relations (IR) as a field of study in the Philippines, as well as interdisciplinary exchange of research and knowledge through workshops, conferences and collaborative publication projects aimed at furthering understanding about the concept of the ‘international’.

The mission and vision of PHISO encompasses goals for research and education. Firstly, besides providing a venue for the discussion of dominant approaches to IR such as realism, liberalism and constructivism, PHISO seeks to develop interest and scholarship in the plurality and decoloniality of IR through the study of theories, praxes, scholars and sources of knowledge stemming from the Global South, particularly the Philippines. This may include relational theory, contrapuntal reading, civilizational encounters in a multiplex world, and the incorporation of homegrown IR texts that express the realities of one’s culture and experiences.

Secondly, PHISO endeavors to foster relations and knowledge-sharing with educational institutions, scholars, practitioners and students in order to strengthen ties between the academe and the public, as well as create a broad base of interest in the field. Lastly, PHISO serves as a platform for critical engagement with the theoretical diversity of IR, from the rich corpus of Euro-American scholarship that has historically characterized the discipline and emerging scholarship critical of the limitations of this legacy.

[Ang Kalipunan para sa Araling Pandaigdigan sa Pilipinas (PHISO) ay ang nangungunang samahan ng mga propesyonal na nakalaan sa pagpapatampok ng Relasyong Pandaigdigan (IR) bilang isang larangan ng pag-aaral sa Pilipinas, gayundin bilang isang inter-disiplinayong palitan ng pagsasaliksik at kaalaman sa pamamagitan ng mga palihan, komperensiya at mga may pagtutulungang proyektong pampahayagan na nakatuon sa mas malawak na pag-unawa ukol sa konsepto ng “internasyonal”.

Ang misyon at bisyon ng PHISO ay hindi lamang natatali sa layunin ng pananaliksik at edukasyon. Una, maliban sa pagbibigay puwang sa mga talakayan ukol sa mga nangungunang pamamaraan sa IR tulad ng reyalismo, liberalismo at konstruktibismo, ang PHISO ay naglalayong paunlarin ang interes at pag-alam sa Global na Relasyong Pandaigdigan sa pamamagitan ng mga teorya, mga pag-aaral at mga bukal ng kaalaman mula sa timog global, partikular sa Pilipinas. Kabilang na rito ang teoryang ‘relationality’, pagbasang contrapuntal, dekolonyal, enkuwentrong sibilisasyon sa mundo, at ang paglalapat ng mga teksto ng IR sa pagpapahayag ng mga katotohanan sa kultura at karanasan ng tao.

Ikalawa, sinisikap ng PHISO na paunlarin ang ugnayan at pagbabahaginan ng mga kaalaman sa pagitan ng mga institusyong edukasyonal, mga iskolar, mga tagaganap at mga mag-aaral upang patatagin ang ugnayan sa pagitan ng akademya at mamamayan, gayundin ay makalikha ng mas malawak na base ng interes sa larangang ito. Huli, ang PHISO ay tumatayong plataporma sa mga kritikal na ugnayan ng iba’t ibang teorya ng IR, mula sa mayamang karanasan ng mga mag-aaral na ‘Euro-American’ na makasaysayang tinukoy at namamayagpag na pag-aaral sa limitasyon ng pamana.]
