POWER TO THE PEOPLE?
Experiences of Populism in Europe and the Philippines
This event is a panel discussion featuring invited academics who will explore the nature and dynamics of the populist politics that is prevalent in the world today. Participants will examine how movements in Europe, Asia, and beyond, are increasingly dominated by politicians that claim to represent the ‘real’ interests of the people, in contrast to individuals that have traditionally taken moderate or centrist positions. The panel may also consider the sustainability of resorting to crowd-pleasing rhetoric, and whether or not being a political ‘outsider’ necessarily equates to representing ‘the people’.

Organized by:

Miriam College (formerly Maryknoll) International Studies Department
